Saw a quote from an official at S&P saying that the downgrade occured because members of congress (tea party) said loud and clear to the media that "default would not matter" and that was a major factor in lowering our rating. When your own congress makes public statements that default is no big deal, its bad. Yes the right-wingers take the reduction in rating as proof that the deficit is too large!
